7 Ways to Conceal a Safe in Your House

Having a home safe for storing cash, jewelry, family photos, and other valuables can give you peace of mind. However, this doesn’t always make you safe from burglars. Some creativity is necessary when hiding safes. Here are seven ways to conceal a safe in your home, including our favorite: a hidden door.

Do you have a basement or an attic that's hard to access? Attics, especially, are ideal hiding places. Most burglars would rather search the rooms in a house and not worry about getting up into an attic or down into a basement. Whichever you choose, consider hiding a safe in a large cardboard box with a false label, such as "old clothes to donate."  Both physical security and misdirection are good concealment methods.

Another idea is to use an object with a cavity as a hiding spot. For example, an old computer tower, printer, or vacuum cleaner has enough room for many smaller safes. This technique relies on unassuming objects to conceal valuables.

Consider hiding valuables inside a wall. After cutting out a section of a wall (between the wall studs), place the safe into the opening and put a decoy air vent cover over it. A fake electrical outlet is sometimes used as an access point and as a cover.

Another option is a picture frame to camouflage what’s behind. It’s a good idea to hang more than one photo or painting, as using only one photo looks too obvious.

Having a lockbox mounted under the floor provides space to hide several valuables. This also makes it nearly impossible for thieves to remove. Many people use a rug or furniture to further hide the location.

Some homeowners use a closet to install their security boxes. Just be sure to hang a lot of trousers, shirts, and other garments in front. Although most burglars look in bedrooms first, it can still be a safe space. Criminals typically move quickly and often overlook areas crowded with objects.

A garage with shelves and a lot of tools, boxes, and other items may provide excellent cover. The messier or more cluttered the shelves, the better. Place heavy and bulky items in front or on top for better protection.

One of the best ways to conceal possessions is in a Murphy door. Even if you haven't heard of our exact product, you've most likely heard about the concept. Put simply, a Murphy door is a bookcase that opens like a door—just like in the movies. In other words, it’s furniture that serves multiple purposes. This solution works as decor, saves space, and is an excellent way to hide a home safe.
