What is a Murphy Bed?

Also known as a pull-down, wall, or fold-down bed, a Murphy bed folds up vertically against a wall when not in use. Sometimes, they are built into a closet or a cabinet. The original inventor, William Lawrence Murphy, first created this innovative solution to save space in his small apartment.

These days, quality Murphy Beds are the perfect addition for several kinds of living arrangements:

  • Minimalist homes
  • Studio apartments
  • Multi-purpose spaces
  • Vacation rentals
  • Guest rooms

How do Murphy Beds work?

Murphy Beds feature a powerful hinge that allows the owner to drop them smoothly. The product can be stowed vertically when not in use. Modern Murphy Beds commonly use spring or piston lift mechanisms to keep them from falling or springing up. When stowed, it lies flat against the wall and is typically camouflaged as other furniture, such as cabinets or shelving. When in use, it lies flat, delivering immense comfort.

What Is the difference between a Wall Bed and a Murphy Bed?

Currently, the two terms are used interchangeably because both styles have evolved into similar items with only a few differences. The most distinguishing differences between the different types are the lifting mechanism hardware and the frame’s construction.

  • Murphy Beds: Hidden, are mounted to either the floor or the wall and use a set of elaborate springs and metal frames to lift and lower the mattress. They’re usually built with a metal frame.
  • Wall Beds: Use a “bi-fold” style and often include cabinets on both sides. Often built on a wooden frame and usually uses pistons to help with lifting and lowering.

Our products are built with style and functionality in mind, and are hidden within practical, beautiful furniture when not in use.

Are Murphy Beds Comfortable To Sleep On?

One of the most common questions we get asked is whether this is a comfortable sleeping platform. The answer is yes! We’ve specifically designed them to be extremely comfortable. Once folded down and into place, it is just as comfortable and stable as any other quality sleeping surface. Our Design Specialists and Customer Representatives can help you select sizes and other features that ensure a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Find the Right Size

Our quality Murphy Beds come in many sizes, so find the right size for your needs to ensure the best fit. Think about who will use this space. Will you need space for just one guest, or do you need something more flexible for one or two? Optional features include side cabinets, which will have a larger footprint. Carefully consider what you need and what will fit into your space.

Select the Right Mattress

Mattresses are not included; you can choose your own up to 11 inches thick. The final selection will play a large role in comfort, so make sure to give it some careful consideration.

  • Traditional Spring: Offers strong support and durability while enabling airflow for a cool night’s sleep.
  • Memory Foam: Conforms to the sleeper’s body. Ensure the memory foam does not exceed the 11-inch thickness limit.
  • Roll Foam: Thinner and easier to ship. This is also a more affordable option that provides adequate comfort.

There are a few that we recommend you do not use:

  • Gel-Topped: Tend to be too heavy.
  • Latex: Typically heavy and does not keep its shape when standing on its end. It may not stay in the gram and can even jam the moving mechanism of our product.
  • Pocketed Coil: Does not hold its shape very well; can crumple, making operating our drow-down mechanism difficult.
